Východiska: nastupujúca generácia vychodoeurópskych umelcov
Príbeh súčasnej východnej Európy sa začína okolo roku 1989. Postkomunistické krajiny sa menia nielen politicky alebo ekonomicky, ale aj kultúrne. Nezávislá kultúra prvý krát po 50tich rokoch vylieza z podzemia.
V nasledujúcich rokoch sa začnú plniť sny o slobode, a zároveň padať prvé ilúzie o nej. Underground sa už nemusí skrývať, ale aj tak ostáva okrajovým, tentokrát skôr z ekonomických ako politických dôvodov.
V regióne strednej a východnej Európy vyrastá nová generácia hudobníkov, umelcov a kultúrnych aktivistov, ktorá nie je poznačená minulosťou. Na druhej strane dnešní dvadsiatnici z tzv. východu často podvedome preberajú najnovšie trendy od svojich západných susedov. Aká je vlastne autentická tvorba mladých umelcov z východnej Európy? Čo reflektuje? Aké otázky nastavuje? Ktoré aktivity, labely, projekty a koncerty z tohto regiónu nás posúvajú dopredu?
Byť z východnej Európy pre mnohých znamená niečo ako stigmu. Stereotyp gastarbeitera, rumunského emigranta umyvajúceho riady v Londýne. Svoju pozornosť zameriavame na západ a o kultúre krajín regiónu vieme často menej ako o poslednom labeli z Kalifornie. Relácia Východiska nadväzuje na aktivity projektu Easterndaze, venovaného mapovaniu mladej kultúry postkomunistických krajín.
Od mája do októbra 2010 sme navštívili celkom šesť krajín: Česko, Slovensko, Poľsko, Maďarsko, Rumunsko a Srbsko (momentálne sme v Skopje, kde „skúmame“ miestnu scénu). Dennodenne sme sa stretávali s umelcami a zisťovali, aké majú podmienky k tvorbe. Okrem umenia sme sa zaujímali aj o širšie socioekonomické a politické aspekty vnímané cez prizmu sučasných dvadsiatnikov. Z týchto častí sa pred nami postupne vytvorila pestrá mozaika alternatívnej kultúry v tomto regióne.
Prostredníctvom rubriky Východiska budeme na Radiu Wave objavovať horizonty nastupujúcej generácie vychodoeurópskych umelcov. Východiska vám budú prinášať informácie o zásadných umeleckých počinoch a ich tvorcoch z krajín byvalého východného bloku. Naším cieľom nie je antagonizovať západ a glorifikovať východ, ale skôr zrušiť kategórie, ktoré už dnes namiesto ostrých hraníc predstavujú skôr kontinuum.

The story of modern Eastern Europe begins sometime around 1989. Postcommunist countries embarked on a long journey of transformation – not only political and economic, but also cultural. For the first time in fourty years, independent culture resurfaced from the underground. In the wake of the fall of communism, dreams about freedom are fulfilled while the first illusions about it founder. Underground doesn’t have to hide anymore though it still remains on the fringes. This time it is for economic rather than political reasons.
In the region of Central and Eastern Europe a new generation of musicians, artists and cultural activists arose unburdened by the past. On the other hand, people in their twenties from the East often subconsciously take over the latest trends from their Western neighbours. How does contemporary authentic art made by young makers from Eastern Europe look like? What does it reflect? What questions does it pose? Which activities, labels, projects and concerts from this region are worth your while?
Being from Eastern Europe is still something of a stigma for many – a stereotypical image of a menial labourer, Romanian émigré washing dishes in London. We are focused on the West and often know less about the culture of this region than about an obscure Californian label. The show Východiska draws on the activities of the Easterndaze project dedicated to exploration of up-and-coming culture of the postcommunist countries.
From May until October 2010 we visited six countries in total: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Serbia, and continue to do so. Each day we met up with musicians and artists to find out about the conditions for their work (we are actually in Skopje at the moment). Aside from art, we were also interested in the wider socio-economic and political aspects as seen through the eyes of the twenty-somethings. From these parts, gradually a diverse mosaic of alternative culture in this region has emerged in front of our eyes.
In our show Východiska we will discover the horizons of the up-and-coming generation in this region. Východiská will inform about important artistic work and their authors who stem from Eastern Europe. Our aim is not to criticize the West and glorify the East but rather, to banish these categories which these days can be seen more as a continuum than clear-cut borders.
