Czeching 2017 introducing emerging Czech artists

28. srpen 2017

In just few years, Czeching, formerly a discussion platform, evolved into a project that helps promising artists on their journey to reach foreign listeners and audiences. Meet this year’s nominees.

All throughout September, on air as well as on the website, Radio Wave will introduce five promising bands nominated by Czech music publicists and music directors. Together with experts from foreign radio stations across Europe, including BBC, Radio France, FM4, Czwórka, OFF Krakow, VAL202, or Rai2, they will vote to choose the project that they think has the best chance to make it abroad. The winner will record an EP at the Czech Radio studios, which will be released on vinyl as well. They will perform at Eurosonic Noorderslag, the biggest European showcase festival, and at two foreign clubs of the Liveurope network. Their music will become a part of the Music Exchange of the European Broadcasting Union, a repository where radio stations from all over Europe can go to draw the songs and live recordings for their broadcasting.

This year’s nominees

Music projects nominated for this year’s Czeching may be familiar to you since they were also included in Radio Wave’s broadcasting: indie post rock band Cold Cold Nights, female singer and producer Zagami Jericho, producer and synthesizer expert HRTL, production team WLW8 and rock’n’roll Lazer Viking.

You can vote for your favorite act on the Czeching website. The winner of the listeners’ vote will receive promotional support, a chance to perform at one of Radio Wave’s events and their music will be included in the Music Exchange of the European Broadcasting Union.

Czeching Showcase – concert and discussions

As last year, this year’s Czeching will end with the final event, Czeching Showcase, which will take place at the Czech Radio garages on September 27. The evening program will include performances of all the nominees. Winners will be announced on the spot and Mary Anne Hobbs, famous British DJ and music director known for supporting new progressive musicians featured on her BBC show, will perform at the after party.

This year, the afternoon program will be filled with more discussions and you can expect debates on the topics of searching for new music talents as well as music export. The discussions will feature local and foreign guest speakers from European radio stations such as Norbert Borzym representing Polish youth radio station Czwórka, Jernej Sobočan from Slovenian VAL202 or Mary Ann Hobbs from BBC. Also representatives of music export offices will be present, namely Julien Fournier from Wallonie-Bruxelles Musiques and Márton Náray, the director of the Czech Music Office, which was officially established this spring, and which is supporting the discussion program.

Young bands will get a chance to meet with music publicists and more experienced musicians during the afternoon event called “Review Face2Face”. All bands, musicians and producers can now send the links to their work to radiowave@rozhlas.cz and they will receive feedback from journalists and established musicians face to face during the afternoon Czeching Showcase program.

Czeching will not be the only Radio Wave’s event dedicated to the support of Czech music scene. In September, radio station’s music editors will provide feedback to one song by a young Czech band every day. The Bendolin and Pandoo projects will release their new records at Radio Wave’s Studio Sessions. Broadcasting and social networks will feature four original music videos – four Czech song interpreted in sign language. You will be also able to hear new background music by Czech artists on air.
